This is because the abdominal area has been weakened due to ostomy surgery.
Some of the common causes of Hernia can be:
-Lifting: not realising some shopping bags and general lifting can be excessive in weight. This can cause strain on the area around the stoma.
-Whilst doing gardening and other normal recreational activities it is easy for a hernia to occur accidentaly due to strain on the weakened muscles of the abdomen.
-Surprisingly a large number of parastomal hernias are caused due to sneezing and coughing. Heavy sneezing and coughing are known to push the ileum through the stoma.
Therefore the best option is to try and prevent a hernia from occuring in the first place. This is best achieved by wearing a suitable support garment/ girdle or belt. This is the far most efficient and safest option to minimise possiblity of needing a hernia surgery. Perventation is better and a lot simpler, than cure.
“There is some evidence that a simple preventation programme involving education, support garment, simple exercises, sensible diet and avoid heavy lifting and smoking may prevent parastomal hernia development in a significant percentages of those with stomas.” The Journal ofStomal Therapy Australia Vol29 No2 (6-15),
